NEWPORT County AFC director Howard Greenhaf has called for unity as the club attempts to move on from the protracted saga of Justin Edinburgh’s move to Gillingham.

Greenhaf and Gills chairman Paul Scally finally agreed a compromise over compensation on Friday night and Edinburgh was unveiled at the League One club on Saturday afternoon.

Two hours later the Exiles, with Edinburgh’s assistant Jimmy Dack acting as caretaker manager, kicked off at AFC Wimbledon and slipped to a fourth successive defeat.

Two goals from Adebayo Akinfenwa sealed the points for the Dons after County’s Kevin Feely had been sent off.

Ahead of Tuesday night’s home clash with Tranmere Rovers, Greenhaf told the Argus that it’s time to put the Edinburgh episode to bed.

And, despite Scally’s admission that Edinburgh had been interviewed twice, County have no intention of reporting Gillingham for any possible illegal approach.

“There is no issue as far as we’re concerned,” said Greenhaf. “They did it the right way.

“They did ring me to speak to Justin and we’re happy with the compensation, otherwise we wouldn’t have let him go.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks and we’re just glad that it’s all done and dusted and we can move on because it has disrupted our season.

“Justin has been the best manager we’ve had, certainly in my time, and we’re sad to see him go but manager’s move on and we wish him all the best.”

Greenhaf also revealed that he has already received applications to replace Edinburgh at Rodney Parade but there will be no rush to make a decision.

“We’ve had lots of enquiries,” he said. “Even before Justin went we had emails and texts but we’ll see how it goes for the next couple of games.

“Jimmy is our caretaker manager for the foreseeable future and Jimmy and Hats [Wayne Hatswell] will definitely be here to the end of the season.

“Jimmy is contracted until the end of the season. His new contract was on the table at the same time as Justin’s but it’s not signed yet.

“We’ll see what happens; if Jimmy wins promotion then it’s a different conversation.

“If Jimmy gets some wins then it might take us a bit longer but we’re definitely looking for a new manager.

“But we’re not going to rush into it. We’ve got to pick the right manager.”

And Greenhaf called on the fans to get behind Dack and the players on Tuesday night as the Exiles look to retain a place in the top seven of League Two.

“It’s important now that everyone gets behind the team and supports the manager,” added Greenhaf.

“The fans were fantastic on Saturday, as they always are, and I’m sure they’ll back Jimmy and the boys on Tuesday night.”
