STAND-IN captain Darren Jones says the players all want caretaker boss Jimmy Dack to be the next full-time manager of Newport County AFC.

Dack takes charge of his third game since Justin Edinburgh’s departure to Gillingham when County take on promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park tomorrow afternoon.

Last week’s 2-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon was followed by a 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers at Rodney Parade on Tuesday and Jones is convinced that the Exiles can take all three points this weekend.

“We can beat anyone in this league,” said Jones, who is expected to take over as skipper with Andy Sandell banned for the next two games.

“Anyone can beat anyone and it is the most consistent sides that will be up there come the end of the season.

“None of us are nervous or scared going to Wycombe; we’re confident that we can go there and take the three points.

“We’re going to take what we did in the second half on Tuesday and I think we’ll be alright.”

Jones says the players are missing Edinburgh but has backed Dack to carry on the good work and secure a place in the League Two play-offs.

“We miss the gaffer because he was great around the place,” said Jones. “All the lads loved him but that’s football and we’ve just got to get on with it.

“Justin is a good manager and he did wonders for the club so of course we’re going to miss him but we’ve got to move on.

“Jimmy is the same, the banter is the same and the lads are still having a laugh but taking things seriously on the pitch.

“We all want Jimmy to take the job because we all like him but it’s out of our hands and it’s out of Jimmy’s hands.

“It’s down to the board and hopefully they pick the right person.

“There are still a lot of points to play for and if we get nine wins that should see us nearly in the automatic places,” he added.

“Wycombe caught us by surprise on the opening day but they lost on Tuesday so they’ll want to bounce back from that.

“We need to catch them early and go and beat them.”
