STRIKER Chris Zebroski is back in training and fighting fit as he aims to score the goals to fire Newport County AFC to promotion.

Zebroski missed last week’s home draw with Tranmere Rovers due to illness and a personal issue and was not selected for the weekend win at Wycombe Wanderers.

But the 28-year-old, who has spoken in the past about his problems with alcohol, is back in the fold and desperate to take on Morecambe at Rodney Parade on Saturday.

“I didn’t train last week and it was difficult not to be involved on Saturday,” said Zebroski.

“I was ill and I had some problems but I’m back now and ready to go.

“I just want to get back playing. I’m eager to get on the pitch on Saturday and score some goals.”

Zebroski paid tribute to former manager Justin Edinburgh for giving him a chance to impress in south Wales after controversial exits from Plymouth Argyle and Cheltenham Town.

“He gave me an opportunity when a lot of people had looked at me and didn’t want to sign me because of my drinking problem and off the field problems,” he said.

“I do owe a lot to the gaffer and to [caretaker boss] Jimmy Dack as well and I think I did well last year.”

Last season’s top scorer has seven goals to his name in 30 appearances so far this campaign and admits that he and all the strikers need to find the net more regularly.

“I’d liked to have scored more goals this year and I think all the strikers are thinking that,” said Zebroski, who is one of several players out of contract in the summer.

“If we have a good year then we all get rewarded and that is another goal,” he added.

“The goals seem to have been quite spread out this year, which takes the pressure off us a little bit, but if I’m not scoring I’m not happy.

“If I’m not creating problems for the opposition I’m disappointed because that’s what the club pays me to do.

“I try to run the channels, stretch teams, score goals and create goals for other people and I’m desperate to get out there again at the weekend.”

Morecambe beat the Exiles home and away last season and also came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the Globe Arena in August.

“Morecambe are a bit of a bogey team since I’ve been here and we want to put a stop to that,” said Zebroski.

“I don’t know why it is that some teams always seem to get the better of you but we can use that because we don’t want it to keep happening.

“We have to follow up a good win at Wycombe with a home win and I’m confident we can.”
