JIMMY Dack believes the addition of Nathan Blake to the boardroom at Newport County can provide a boost to the players and management of the club.

The Exiles have slipped out of the play-off spots in League Two since the departure of previous manager Justin Edinburgh, with Dack confirmed to remain in charge until the end of the season.

And he believes the addition of former County and Cardiff striker Blake, a Wales international, provides a timely boost.

“I think the board probably need a football opinion in that boardroom, there is no doubt about that,” he said.

“They are good people at this football club, but a bit inexperienced in football decisions. They are good guys and want to do what is best for the club, but Nathan might just give them another dimension.

“You can’t knock them, they’ve progressed as a board and progressed the club, but sometimes you need that little bit extra and Nathan will add that to the board.

“I met him yesterday and he seems an enthusiastic guy. He’s got his opinions and hopefully it will work out for him here.”

Dack did, however, go head-to-head with the Argus when questioned on Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Morecambe, dismissing the view that it was a disappointing performance.

“I would disagree that Saturday wasn’t a good performance (as suggested by the Argus) in the first half we weren’t at our best, but in the second half they couldn’t get out of their own half and we had 28 crosses into their box,” he said.

“We had eight shots, only one on target, our stats don’t compare, I know possession doesn’t win games and I’m not hiding from the fact we aren’t scoring enough goals, but if our forwards get scoring again, we will be right back in the mix.”

And Dack isn’t expecting any imminent striker signings, despite the loan window being open.

“We are going to go with what we’ve got in terms of the strikers at the club rather than look at loan deals and at the moment, they aren’t hitting the heights they can do,” he said.

“With forwards it is a confidence thing and just at the moment, ours are a little bit off it, but we will work them hard on the training ground and once they get going again, they’ll be a force.”

Dack is hoping the Exiles approach the daunting trip to Burton in the same manner as when they won at Wycombe at the start of the month.

“Burton is a tough game, there is no doubt about that, but everyone said the same thing before we went to Wycombe and we got the win there,” he said.

“We have nothing to lose, we have to try and give our all in every game between now and the end of the season. We have 14 cup finals.

“We are going there to try and get three points against a hard working team who press all over the park.

“But their two strikers haven’t scored more than ours, that’s what I will say, they get more goals all over the pitch and that’s something we need to work on.

“We will consider (the Morcambe) game in selecting our starting XI; we won’t always retain a winning team, nor react to a defeat with sweeping changes.”

And Chelsea fan Dack admits there is a personal satisfaction about Saturday’s visit to the Pirelli Stadium.

“If you’d told me a few months ago I’d be going up against Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in a Football League match with us both as managers, would I have believed it? Probably not,” he quipped.
