MIDFIELDER Max Porter says the teams chasing a play-off spot in League Two are all as nervous as each other but he believes there is no pressure on Newport County AFC.

County have endured a topsy-turvy six weeks since the departure of manager Justin Edinburgh, winning three games and drawing three but also losing four.

But after a 1-0 home win over Luton Town and a creditable 0-0 draw at Plymouth Argyle the Exiles head to Accrington Stanley this Friday in seventh place.

And Porter is certain that the squad, now led by Edinburgh’s former assistant Jimmy Dack, is in good shape as the end of the campaign looms.

“It was a massive for us. We’ve had two good results against two of our rivals,” said the 27-year-old.

“Four points from those games is a really good return and it sets us up in a great position going into the last eight games.

“We’ve just got to keep chipping away now and keep picking up the points.

“If you look at all the teams up there we’re all getting a bit nervous, winning one and losing one,” he added.

“We’re all trying to get over that line. It is a pressure cooker but, the way we look at it, there’s no pressure on us. We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“We’ve just gone and got two big results and we’ve got to follow that up, get more points on the board and keep chipping away.”

Porter admits that the prospect of a Friday night in Accrington is not too appealing but he is certain that County can pick up another positive result on the road.

“No disrespect to Accrington but nobody likes going there do they? Everyone would say the same,” he said.

“It’s a tough game and we need to show the same effort and application we did at Plymouth to get at least a point and maybe three.

“Most footballers like the night games. We like the games under lights at Rodney Parade and I think this is a game we’ve got to look forward to.

“It is a great boost to be back in the top seven and to know that results are going our way but all we can do is control the controllables.

“That is the next game and we have to go up to Accrington and get a point at the minimum.”

Dack remains hopeful of adding one or two players on loan before Friday but negotiations are still ongoing and no deals are imminent.
