DIRECTOR Howard Greenhaf and chairman Les Scadding are confident that new manager Terry Butcher is the right choice to help Newport County AFC progress.

“Terry has shown the desire and he has been there, done it and got the T-shirt,” said Greenhaf as Butcher was unveiled at today’s press conference.

“All the managers we did interview have got good records but they’ve not got promotions.

“It would be quite easy to appoint a manager to stand still but we didn’t want to stand still.

“We wanted a manager to take us forward and Terry can do that.

“Justin [Edinburgh] was a leader and Terry will be a leader.”

Both Greenhaf and Scadding also confirmed that Butcher is happy with next season’s reduced playing budget.

“The budget won’t be the same as last year, it will be smaller but Terry’s happy with that,” said Greenhaf.

Scadding, back from holiday for the announcement, said: “I don’t think anyone should have any worries about my commitment.

“The funding is still going to be there for the club to go forward.

“Funds have to be looked at and investment has to be looked at. Perhaps we need more people on board to produce a bigger budget.

“But there is a budget there to work with and I’m very confident that we’ve made the right choice in Terry.”
