DEPARTING manager Jimmy Dack says the only part of the Newport County AFC job he won’t miss is the commute – but that won’t be a problem for boss Terry Butcher, writes Andrew Penman.

Born in Singapore but brought up in Lowestoft, Butcher made his name as a player at Ipswich Town and still has a home in the area but he will be moving his family to south Wales this summer.

“I’ll move over here,” said the former England skipper. “Me my wife Rita and my dog will move here to get a feel for the place. Then you spend more time at the club and really feel part of it.

“It would be a long way to commute from Suffolk!”

Dack, who took over from Justin Edinburgh in February, says today’s home clash with Oxford United at Rodney Parade will be emotional.

“I’ve been here four years now and I’ve given everything for four years,” said Edinburgh’s former assistant.

“All we’ve done is progress as a football club and I just felt that the time was right for me to pass the baton on and let someone else take the club forward.

“I won’t miss coming up and down that M4, doing 40 junctions a day.

“I won’t miss that side of it but I will miss this football club massively and everyone around it.

“I well up when I think about it because we’ve had some real good times here and it gives me an enormous sense of achievement to see where the club is at the moment.”

Dack says the highlight of his time at the club was winning the Conference play-off final against Wrexham in 2013.

“Wembley will live with me forever and is the pivotal moment, I still think about it every day,” he said.

“When I think about those grown men, women and children in that stand crying, that will live with me forever.

“And I hope to God I can replicate that feeling again, because you can’t buy that sort of stuff, it’s just unbelievable.

“The first season in the Football League we were 14th and this season we’re eighth or ninth – it’s progression.

“I think everyone in the club should appreciate the job that’s been done here.

“My parting message is thank you for everything,” he added.

“I get choked thinking about it. Thanks to the staff, supporters, the board and the press guys as well.

“It’s been a pleasure.”
