NEWPORT County AFC manager Terry Butcher says supporters should not panic at a lack of signings so far this summer.

The new Exiles boss has seen 15 players leave Rodney Parade this summer and only three new arrivals so far.

But Butcher says he is close to being able to announce more new additions to the squad and he insists he is happy with the progress he is making.

“We're very close to reaching agreements with a couple more players, and although we've not managed to sign any further players this week I'm still pleased with the progress that we are making,” said Butcher.

“These things can sometimes drag on a bit longer than you would hope, there's a lot of to-ing and fro-ing sometimes, but we're still on target to bring in the type of players that we want.

“I can understand that supporters want to see signings quickly,” added Butcher. “But I'd like to assure them that we're working hard behind the scenes to build a squad of players that we feel will be able to compete in League Two.

“There is certainly no panic from us in terms of being able to bring in the type of, and quantity of players that we need to.

“There are a lot of good players out there, and a lot of good players who are interested in joining us.

“I'd like to thank supporters for their patience so far, we really appreciate the support.”

Meanwhile, former County boss Jimmy Dack has been confirmed as the new assistant manager at League Two rivals Crawley Town.

Dack joined the Exiles as assistant to Justin Edinburgh in 2011 and the pair steered the club to promotion via the Conference play-off final at Wembley two years later.

When Edinburgh left for Gillingham in February this year Dack took over as manager at Rodney Parade until the end of the campaign.

But after missing out on the League Two play-offs he says he declined the offer to stay on as manager and he will now join his good friend Mark Yates at Crawley.

Dack, who had two spells as a player with the West Sussex club in 1993-94 and 2001-02, said: “It’s amazing to think that 20 years after I played for the club I am back at Crawley Town as Mark’s assistant.

“The club’s rise into the Football League has been amazing and one I have followed closely and it is now great to be part of Crawley Town again in this role.

“I’m looking forward to working with Mark and the players and I can’t wait now for pre-season and to help get us prepared for the challenges of a new campaign.”
