FORMER Newport County AFC striker Shaun Jeffers has signed a one-year contract with League Two rivals Yeovil Town.

The 23-year-old started his career at Coventry City and had loan spells at Cheltenham Town, Cambridge United and Tamworth before joining Peterborough United in 2013.

He moved on to the Exiles in January 2014 as part of the deal that took Conor Washington from Rodney Parade to London Road.

Jeffers scored three goals in 36 appearances for County – all last season and all away from home.

He netted a consolation goal at Reading in the 3-1 Capital One Cup defeat last August and also scored in the League Two wins at Carlisle United in November 2014 and at Accrington Stanley in March this year.

But the former England under-19 international never nailed down a regular starting spot under Justin Edinburgh or Jimmy Dack and was released by new manager Terry Butcher last month.

Jeffers played in a trial match for Yeovil in May and has now agreed to join the Glovers from July 1, becoming manager Paul Sturrock’s sixth signing of the summer.

"I am delighted to sign for Yeovil,” he told the club’s official website. “I can see it is a great club and I am very grateful to manager for giving me opportunity to show what I can do.

“I played in the trials game that the manager and his staff organised and I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates in pre-season.”

Jeffers could get the chance to break his duck at Rodney Parade when Yeovil visit Newport on November 21.
