QPR manager Chris Ramsey has admitted that his side struggled to break down Newport County in the Rs' penultimate pre-season friendly, writes Jordan Trott.

The Exiles held the Championship side to a scoreless draw at a sodden Rodney Parade on Sunday but Ramsey conceded that County were unlucky not to have scored.

QPR, who face Italian side Atalanta on Sunday, boasted two England internationals in the shape of goalkeeper Rob Green and centre-back Steven Caulker and the visiting boss believes it was a perfect workout.

"I think Newport made this a fantastic test," said Ramsey. "We did struggle to break them down.

"They were a very strong team, with good speed up front and if we're being honest they should have scored. Rob Green pulled off some good saves."

Ramsey was given the QPR managerial role on a permanent basis this summer after filling in as caretaker manager last season when Harry Redknapp resigned. Ramsey could not keep Rangers in the Premier League but was handed a three year-deal.

Green has also stayed at Loftus Road and can see some similarities between the Rs and County because of plenty of ins and outs.

"I was speaking to their manager who has brought in a lot of new players, a lot of young players and they are going to be - a bit like ourselves - an unknown quantity," said the 12-times capped stopper.

"You're looking to hopefully hit the ground running because you genuinely don't know how the (other) teams are going to turn out."

He continued: "Newport have got pace up front, they've got strength, they've got direct players, and they've got football players - so it's a good mix."
