NEWPORT County AFC star Seth Nana Twumasi is convinced that the team’s first win is just around the corner after a frustrating night in Hartlepool.

County went down to their third defeat in four matches under new boss Terry Butcher as Scott Fenwick scored the only goal of the game at Victoria Park on Tuesday night.

But Twumasi, who suffered back-to-back relegations with Yeovil over the past two seasons, is convinced that the Exiles have the talent to climb the League Two table and beat the drop.

“I thought in the first half we were the better team but obviously when you don’t take your chances in football sometimes you get punished and I think that’s what happened in the second half,” said the 25-year-old.

“We had lots of shots but we just couldn’t hit the target and they hit the target and scored from it to win them the game.

“We are getting better,” he added. “We’ve got quality in this team and it’s just a matter of putting it together and grinding out the results.

“We’re getting closer each time and I’m sure it won’t be long before we get the first win.

“We’ve got a lot of injuries at the moment and I’m sure when they’re back they’re going to add that little bit extra to our team and we’ll be firing.

“When you win it gives you lots of confidence and the earlier it comes the better.

“I’m sure it’s on its way, starting on Saturday.”

Twumasi says the key is to score the opening goal of the game – something Butcher’s boys have yet to achieve in the league.

“If we score the first goal I’m sure confidence would be oozing through and we could go on and get more goals,” he said.

“We’ve got good players here. The youngsters have come in and they don’t look out of place.

“Everyone is working their socks off and showing the manager what they can do and I’ve been very impressed with them.

“I’ve got no doubt about it that we’ll be alright. It’s just a matter of finishing off the chances when we get them and also cutting out silly little mistakes and we’ll be fine.

“In this game you’re judged by winning,” he added. “The performances have been good but sometimes you need to grind out results and win ugly and that’s what we need to do.”
