NEWPORT County AFC have extended the loan of midfielder Josh Laurent and cut short defender Aaron Hayden’s stay at Rodney Parade.

Laurent has so far started just one game for County – the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Swindon Town – since his loan move from Brentford in August but he has impressed manager Terry Butcher.

The 20-year-old, who made his Football League debut as a substitute against Leyton Orient last month, will remain with the Exiles until the end of October.

Laurent says the experience of playing under Butcher and assistant manager Russell Osman has already benefited him.

“I am really enjoying my time here,” he said. “The lads are great and the training is good.

“Both Terry and Russell are always helpful and it has been a good experience so far.

"The manager is always welcoming, telling me where I can improve and helping me progress as player.

"In the next month I just want to get as much game-time as I can and help the boys get the first three-points."

The extended loan deal will now run until the home game against Northampton Town on October 31.

But Hayden, who arrived on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the start of the season, has now returned to Molineux.

The 18-year-old centre-back took to Twitter to apologise for his performance in a difficult debut at Cambridge United on the opening day of the season.

But County announced on September 4 that his loan had been extended to October 10.

Butcher said less than two weeks ago:"Aaron has done very well after a tough baptism at Cambridge.

"He has bided his time and pushed his way into the team against Plymouth and was very good against Swindon in the week.

"Aaron is happy here and I spoke to Wolves and they are happy for him to be here.

"It is another month and another progression for him, he gives us great scope because he is quick and strong across the back."

But crucial errors from the youngster in defeats to York City and Morecambe in the last two games have led to a change of heart.

Butcher now looks set to bring in another defender on loan before Saturday’s trip to Dagenham & Redbridge.
