DAGENHAM & Redbridge striker Christian Doidge is out to land another dagger to the heart of his hometown club this weekend.

The 23-year-old former Cwmbran Celtic and Croesyceiliog front man was born in Newport and was offered to the Exiles during Justin Edinburgh’s reign.

But Edinburgh rejected the chance to sign him from Carmarthen Town and Doidge was snapped up by Dagenham.

Doidge then scored in the Daggers’ 3-2 victory at Rodney Parade in April – the game that finally killed off County’s play-off hopes.

He scored his second goal of this campaign in last week’s 2-1 defeat at Carlisle United and he’s aiming to keep County rooted to the bottom of League Two when the sides meet at Victoria Road on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s always great to score,” said Doidge. “I absolutely love scoring goals and every time I do score a goal it makes me really happy. “Scoring an away goal was vital and it was disappointing conceding two but that’s football and we go again on Saturday.”

And if he were to score against the Exiles again Doidge would have no mixed emotions.

He told the Argus in April: “It’s amazing to score against my hometown club; I had quite a few family members in the stand so it was nice to score in front of them.

“No mixed feelings for me, I am a Dagenham player and had to do my job.”

Teammate Joe Widdowson is looking to get back to winning ways this weekend against Terry Butcher’s men.

“It will nice to be playing back at home after a couple of away trips, so it should be a good test against Newport and we’re looking to win,” he said.

“It will be especially hard because they will be desperate to win. They’ll be trying to rectify their recent form and I’m sure they will be up for it on Saturday.”

But Widdowson believes a win could set the team up for a positive run of results.

“You want a good run, at any time of the season,” he said.

“It’s still early days so I’m not sure the tables fully taken shape in terms of the position teams will end up in but we see every game in this league as a winnable one.

“So yeah it would be nice to get a run going this weekend after last week.”
