NEWPORT County boss Terry Butcher has assured supporters that reinforcements are coming as he bids to improve his squad, writes Michael Pearlman.

Aaron Hayden’s loan was terminated early this week as he returned to parent club Wolves, leaving County’s squad as thin as ever.

But Butcher is happy things will change on that front shortly.

“I don’t want to go into that (the details of why Hayden left the club), I wouldn’t want to divulge the conversations we’ve had, but suffice to say, he’s gone back to Wolves and we will leave it at that,” he told the Argus.

“We already wanted another defender, it’s our priority, very much so, Aaron Hayden leaving and Matt Taylor’s ongoing injury makes it a necessity of a signing for us.

“We need to reinforce, very much so and we have been working on that for some time.

“We are making good progress and I’m not just saying that to appease people. If we weren’t making progress, I would say so.

“We hope to have good news on that front next week.”

Of County’s other loanees, Josh Laurent and Zak Ansah, the boss was more upbeat.

“I’ve been impressed with Josh Laurent, but there is a lot more to come from him,” he said after confirming he stays with the club for another month.

“He’s elegant, a good runner on the ball because he’s languid, he’s got good acceleration and scores unbelievable precision goals in training,” Butcher explained.

“I’m really pleased he’s staying and he’s enjoying it here, being around the first team. He’s pushing very hard to start games.

“He’s showing fantastic promise as is Zak Ansah; another we are hoping will stay on.”

Butcher confirmed he expects Danny Holmes to replace Hayden from Saturday’s side who lost to Morecambe.

“Danny Holmes comes back in, he can play anywhere, so we have a few options,” he said.

“Danny has done very well for us this season; it’s good to have him back. One in and one out; rather than a big amount of changes.

“Now we just want the match to come.”
