STRIKER Lenell John-Lewis is happy to welcome new loan signing Tyler Blackwood to the squad and he is convinced that the goals will come soon for him and Newport County AFC.

The former Grimsby Town front man has not found the net in six appearances for County so far but he’s shaken off a hamstring problem and is desperate to get off the mark at Carlisle United tomorrow.

And he’s not concerned about the added competition provided by Blackwood, who arrived from Queens Park Rangers on Thursday.

“I’m happy. I think the squad needs it,” said John-Lewis. “I think the team needs it. It will be nice to have a fresh impetus into the team.

“I don’t know much about Tyler but I’m sure he’ll provide something different and help us climb the table.

“I think we need to improve throughout the whole team.

“I haven’t scored yet but on a personal level I’m not necessarily worried. I think we’re getting chances and that’s the most important thing. Goals will come.

“I think luck at both ends of the pitch hasn’t really gone for us yet.

“But we got a first clean sheet last week and hopefully we can build on that.”

The 26-year-old suffered a hamstring strain in his League Two debut for the Exiles at Cambridge United in August and was again forced off at half-time at Dagenham & Redbridge last weekend.

But he insists he’s fit and ready to fire the Exiles to a first win of the campaign tomorrow.

“If I wasn’t getting in the right places and wasn’t getting chances then I’d be getting frustrated,” he said.

“You always want to hit the ground running, especially at a new club, but I haven’t been frustrated personally.

“I have been frustrated with the results, as everyone has, but I think once we start winning goals will come and if I can make that happen then all the better.

“We’ve shown that we can play some really good football and I think that’s why the mood has been so positive,” he added.

“It’s just about being clinical now and I think confidence as well.

“We haven’t scored a lot of goals in the last few games and I think confidence is a big part of that.

“Once one goal goes in then two and three do, everyone is more confident, the right passes are picked out and goals start flowing.

“As a striker you just want one to go in, no matter how it goes in, and you kick on from there.

“Hopefully that will be the case this weekend.”
