NEW assistant manager Warren Feeney insists there is no long-term plan in place for him to succeed John Sheridan as Newport County AFC boss.

The former Northern Ireland international left his role as manager at Linfield in his native Belfast to become Sheridan’s number two at Rodney Parade last week.

Having previously played for Cardiff City and Swansea City, Feeney’s family home is in Langstone and he’s delighted to be reunited with his wife and kids.

With Sheridan likely to seek a job closer to his roots in the North West at the end of this season Feeney is seen as an ideal successor.

But he says he has been given no assurances about his future beyond this campaign.

“No. Look, it doesn’t even come into it,” he said. “Contracts are nothing to me – I just want to get out there and help this team.

“I just focus on getting out on that training pitch and enjoying it.

“I’m looking forward to working with these players and working under the gaffer.

“Once I got the phone call from the manager I wanted to come over.

“I loved my time back home. Linfield was a fantastic club for me but, there’s no doubt about it, I wanted to get back into full-time football.

“I’m still learning and the opportunity to come and work with the gaffer was one I couldn’t turn down.”

The pull of family life also played a big part in the move for the 34-year-old.

“When I was at Cardiff and Swansea I moved to Langstone and two of my kids were born here,” he said.

“My father is from Swansea as well and this is where I was going to retire anyway – this is where I was going to settle.

“My wife and my kids are based in Langstone, I’ve done my badges with the Welsh FA and I’m working with a manager who I know – it ticked all the boxes.

“At the minute the only way is up and with a little bit of patience we can get things right in the long run and get up that league table.”
