NEWPORT County AFC manager John Sheridan praised his side for a mature display as they secured a vital three points at Wycombe Wanderers.

An own goal from home defender Marcus Bean just after the hour mark and gave the Exiles a fortunate lead.

But sub Scott Boden hit a second in the last minute and Sheridan was convinced that his side were worthy winners.

“I thought they were excellent from the first whistle,” said the Exiles boss, whose side remain bottom of League Two but are now level on points with Yeovil Town and Dagenham & Redbridge.

“We had a game plan and the players went about their jobs really well.

“I thought it was a really solid performance and I thought we looked a really good team tonight against really tough opposition.

“They put balls in the box and their set plays are very good but as a team we dealt with things very well and created good chances as well.”

Not that Sheridan is getting carried away with one result.

“I’m just pleased that we got the three points that we were after,” he added.

“It’s a long season and it’s still early days for the players with me.

“The players have got to get used to me and I’m still trying to find a formation that suits us.

“But I’ll stick to my principles and get a bit of belief in the players if I can.

“It’s not going to do us any harm coming to one of the top teams in the division and putting on a display like that.”

Sheridan said the first goal was the bit of luck but he felt his side were worthy winners.

"You make your own luck and sometimes, for some reason, you don’t get much of it when you’re at the bottom," he said.

"But I think we made some decent chances as well – Big John and Janoi Donacien should have scored in the first half – and I think we deserved to win the game.

"We created opportunities to score more goals and it’s great that Scott came on and just killed the game because they do put balls in the box.

"But we defended really well. Joe hasn’t really had too much to do.

"There were no individuals – it was a complete team performance for me.

"I’m not really bothered who scores the goals but it’s always nice to score goals and then keep a clean sheet, which was a big plus for us.

"I’m really pleased with the way we played; our shape was good and people knew what their jobs were.

"When you’ve got them all together and working hard for each other you’ve got a chance of winning and our performance proved that. I thought we were worthy winners."
