FORMER Newport County AFC loan star Scot Bennett says Exiles boss John Sheridan would be a "good fit" for Notts County, if he wins the chance to succeed Ricardo Moniz at Meadow Lane.

Sheridan is now second favourite to become the Magpies' new manager, with the bookies making Grimsby Town's Paul Hurst the number one choice.

Sheridan has again dismissed links to Notts as "paper talk” but it is understood the club hierarchy are still keen on him.

Bennett played under Sheridan at Rodney Parade, where he helped the club to achieve a 10-game unbeaten run to climb off the bottom of the table and out of the drop zone.

And the former Exeter City defender, who was recalled by Notts on New Year's Eve, has nothing but praise for the way Sheridan went about his business.

"He was a very decent manager and one of the better ones I have played under," he told the Nottingham Post.

"He is organised and works a lot on shape, but he also wants you to get the ball down and play.

"He's proven at Newport that he can get the team on a run of wins and draws.

"And I think he would be a good fit for the club.

"But obviously it depends on what the chairman wants and the direction he wants to go."

Meanwhile, Grimsby director John Fenty says the Mariners have received no approach from Notts for their manager.

Notts have monitored Hurst's progress at Grimsby, who recorded a convincing 3-0 win over the Magpies in pre-season, and are hoping to make an appointment early next week.

They are currently on a decent run in the National League with just two defeats in their last 14 matches and Fenty believes Hurst is fully committed to the club.

"We are pleased that our manager is being linked with other clubs that are looking for a manager," said Fenty.

"This indicates the kind of success that we have had and hope to continue to have.

"At this moment in time, we have had no interest whatsoever and we believe Paul is fully committed to Grimsby Town Football club, and wants to get this football club promoted."
