NEWPORT County AFC manager Warren Feeney has told his fringe players they need to find new clubs or risk ending up on the scrap heap.

Feeney is looking to offload some members of his squad ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline and he’s likely to be open to offers for Seth Nana Twumasi, Matt Taylor and Nathan Ralph, amongst others.

The Exiles boss is also on the lookout for players who can strengthen his squad after Saturday’s trip to Morecambe.

But, despite the club receiving a big financial boost due to the recent sale of Aaron Collins and a sell-on clause for Conor Washington, he says money remains tight.

“A new manager wants to bring in new players,” said Feeney.

“When I was a player I hated sitting around and not playing.

"I remember when I was at Cardiff and Jimmy [Floyd Hasselbaink] and Robbie [Fowler] came in.

"I didn't want to sit on the bench, I wanted to go and play.

“It’s alright just picking up your wage but three months down the line there’s going to be 2,000 people out of contract.

“You can get a head-start on them by going and playing football.

“I can’t force anyone to leave but if there is a couple that want to go and play football I’m not one of those to stand in their way.”

Asked if he had been handed any of the Washington money, reported to be ‘nearly’ seven figures, Feeney said: “To be honest I don’t but the board has been very supportive of me and let me get on with it.

“If I could get the amount that’s been reported I think I’d be going after Championship players!

“All of a sudden everyone thinks you’ve got money so they add on an extra couple of hundred quid on the loan fee or the wages.

“I wouldn’t be in a position to pay a transfer fee,” he added. "I think the days of paying transfer fees are gone unless you're a big hitter.

“There’s players you’ll go for and there’s an extra £10,000 on the fee because everyone thinks we’re in a really healthy position.

“And you get agents ringing you and every player starts at £1,000 a week (wages) so it is difficult.

“But if it is the right player and they can keep us in the league then you’ve got to pay it because it is the going rate.

“I’m on the lookout constantly until that window closes and even afterwards when the loan window opens.”
