WARREN Feeney insists the planning for next season won’t begin properly until Newport County AFC are mathematically safe from relegation.

County, who travel to Luton Town on Saturday, know that they need one more point from their last three games to secure League Two status.

York City have to win all three of their remaining games to have any chance of catching the Exiles as they are nine points behind with an inferior goal difference.

But Feeney says his side is not safe yet, despite a good against Oxford United on Tuesday.

“A lot of people have said to me ‘that’s it’ but it’s not, said the Exiles boss.

“Until it’s done we’ll still prepare the exact same way as we prepare for every game.

“Fair play to York; they’re down there fighting for their lives and they’re making it hard.

“But we’ve just got to look after ourselves. We are close but until it’s done we’ll keep going and hopefully get over that line.

“I don’t think you can plan for next season until it’s done,” he added.

“A lot of people will probably look at it and think it will probably be done on Saturday whether we win or not but football can come back to bite you.

“Yes I’m speaking to agents and recruitment consultancy guys as they call them now but the thing is to just get over the line and then we’ll worry about next year.”

Feeney says it will need long-term planning for the club to progress.

“You’re not going to have magic overnight – it’s going to be a two, three or four year plan,” he said.

“As long as we stay up this year and make progress next year on and off the park we’re going in the right direction.”

And there has been progress in discussions that could see the team training full-time at Spytty Park next season.

“We’ve been training at Spytty this week and the Football Trust of Wales have helped us as well,” added Feeney.

“Spytty is a great facility right on our doorstep and I know the club has been speaking to Steve Ward at Newport Live and they’ve been very helpful.

“If we can get a good relationship with them I think it will be good for the club and good for the city because I think the training ground is very important.

“Talks are ongoing and hopefully we can come to an agreement, help each other and have a good base next year.”
