NEWPORT County AFC brought down the curtain on their League Two campaign with a 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon thanks to Toyosi Olusanya's 80th-minute penalty. Here's what we learned...

1. Rhys Taylor capable of succeeding in League Two

The goalkeeper made a surprise Football League debut for County following the end of his loan spell at Wrexham and, apart from flapping at one high ball, he put in an impressive display.

Taylor is in talks with Wrexham but he showed on Saturday that he could be one of the better League Two stoppers if given the chance. With Joe Day contracted for next season and money tight, however, that is unlikely to be with the Exiles.

2. Lack of goals the real problem

A total of 43 goals in 46 games – the joint lowest tally in the division – is perhaps the major factor in County’s struggles this season and manager Warren Feeney admitted they lacked belief in the final third again on Saturday.

Top scorer Scott Boden hasn’t netted since Portsmouth away on March 12 – the last win of the season – and Lenell John-Lewis will be disappointed with his goal return of five in 30 starts, while Feeney appears not to trust Tom Meechan just yet.

3. Adebayo Akinfenwa would be a big hit for County

How County could do with a player like The Beast, not that there are many similar specimens to Akinfenwa.

He may only have six goals this season but the 33-year-old is such an intimidating presence that he bullies defences and creates space for others to shine around him. He is available this summer and would be a massive fan favourite at Rodney Parade.

4. AFC Wimbledon show it can be done

Neal Ardley kept the Dons up on the final day in 2013 and they finished 20th the following year and 15th the next before this season’s surge into the play-offs in seventh place.

Patience and gradual improvements from a club with a similar history to County, fan-owned and without a large budget or fan-base. They are showing the Exiles the way.

5. Hard work starts now for Warren Feeney

The boss has been saying for weeks that he wants to bring in his own players this summer and this match showed again why the squad needs to be overhauled.

County matched Wimbledon for much of the match but were too timid in attack and the hosts had one or two star individuals to give them that vital edge, even though they fielded a second-string side with eight changes.
