NEWPORT County AFC boss Warren Feeney took the number of fresh faces at Rodney Parade this summer into double figures today by snapping up left-back Dan Butler on a two-year deal.

The 21-year-old, who joins the Exiles after helping Torquay United avoid relegation from the National League last term, is the 11th player in all to sign on the dotted line for next season.

As well as the 10 new arrivals, defender Darren Jones accepted a 12-month contract extension to remain a member of the County squad for the 2016/17 campaign.

Butler has got experience of playing in the Football League having made nearly 50 appearances for boyhood club Portsmouth in a three-year spell at Fratton Park.

“I’m happy to have signed and I’m looking forward to the future and the start of pre-season,” said Butler, who turned down a new contract at Plainmoor.

“I’m fed up of sitting at home now, so I’m looking forward to meeting the lads. There are a lot of new signings here and we’re all in the same position, and hopefully we can gel quickly.

“I’ve had a taste of League football with Portsmouth and last season I had to drop down to the Conference, but I’ve benefited from that and played a lot of games and I’m ready to get back into League Two and hopefully play well for Newport.

“I’ve got a lot of energy and as a left-back my first priority is a clean sheet, but I also like to create a lot of chances and had 14 assists last year, and I want to add to that by bombing forward and linking up down the left to create a lot of chances for the strikers.”

Feeney added: “I’m delighted to sign Daniel, he’s a very good prospect but not only that he’s had games for undoubtedly the biggest club in the League.

“There were a few clubs interested in him and we had to go and show our honesty and what we wanted in making the first move and, to be fair, he wanted to come and play.

“Daniel is athletic, he can defend and he’ll be a good addition for the club.”

Meanwhile, former County midfielder Yan Klukowski has joined National League outfit York City on a two-year deal.

Klukowski, 29, was released by the Exiles in May following a disappointing season in League Two.

He scored eight goals in 73 games for County in his two years at Rodney Parade after moving from Forest Green Rovers.
