BOSS Warren Feeney bolstered Newport County’s attacking options tonight by signing striker Jon Parkin on a one-year deal.

Parkin, 34, known as ‘The Beast’, has been brought to Rodney Parade as the club continues to assess Lenell John-Lewis’ injury picked up during the friendly clash with Caldicot Town.

The forward joins the Exiles after spending the past two seasons with Forest Green Rovers, where he netted 38 times in more than 80 games.

“Returning to the Football League was a big bonus for me because I wanted at least another season at this level to challenge myself and hopefully I can score plenty of goals for the team,” said Parkin.

Manager Feeney added: “Jon is another signing that will help the team tremendously because of the experience he brings to the squad.

“Jon has scored goals at every level he has played and his goalscoring record speaks for itself, and I believe we have players in the squad here that can create goalscoring chances for him.

“He obviously will miss the first three games due to suspension, but with the way the fixtures are scheduled it means that Jon will only miss the first week of the season.

“Jon compliments well with the players that we have already brought in over the pre-season and I'm very much looking forward to working with him.”

Born in Yorkshire, Parkin began his playing career at Barnsley, where he made his first-team debut at the age of 17.

He went on to play for York City, Macclesfield Town, Hull City, Stoke City, Preston North End, Cardiff City and Fleetwood Town.
