NEWPORT County AFC will go up against Premier League club Swansea in the new-look EFL Trophy in the coming season.

As well as facing the Swans' academy, the Exiles will lock horns with AFC Wimbledon and Plymouth.

Warren Feeney's side will welcome the west Walians and Dons to Rodney Parade while they face a trip to Devon.

Swansea will have to field a minimum of five first team players under the competition rules while six of their starting line-up must have been eligible for the under-21s on June 30.

County triumphed when they took on Swansea in the quarter-finals of the FAW Premier Cup in December of 2008 thanks to an injury time goal by Charlie Griffin.

The previous season the Swans knocked Peter Beadle's County out of the FA Cup at Spytty Park, winning 3-1 after strikes by Lee Trundle, Leon Britton and Izzy Iriekpen with Ian Hillier netting for the hosts.

Sixteen category one academies were invited to play against League One and League Two clubs as part of a one-season, 64-team competition trial.

Premier League champions Leicester, Chelsea, Everton, West Ham United, Stoke City, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Middlesbrough accepted places in the competition.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle declined with their places going to Championship sides.

County’s section of the draw threw up the possibility of going up against Chelsea, the Hammers, Swans and Reading and it was the Welsh side that came out of the hat in Southern Group B along with Wimbledon, promoted to League One via the play-offs last season, and League Two rivals Plymouth.

The competition is split into 16 groups of four teams with the top two going through to the knockout stages with the aim of making it to Wembley on Saturday, April 2.

There is the carrot of an enhanced prize fund with an expected £1.95m being up for grabs, including £10,000 per win and £5,000 per draw during the group stage and £100,000 for the eventual winner.
