NEWPORT County AFC secured their first win since March to shock League Two promotion hopefuls Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Defender Jamie Turley scored the only goal of the game after 34 minutes and then put in a sterling display at the back alongside Darren Jones and captain Scot Bennett as County deservedly ended a 13-game winless streak.

The three points will be a big relief to manager Warren Feeney and huge morale boost ahead of another tough trip to Luton Town on Tuesday night.

Feeney made two changes to the side that was beaten 3-2 by MK Dons in the EFL Cup and switched back to a 4-4-2 formation.

New loan signing Jordan Green replaced the injured Jack Compton on the right wing and Jennison Myrie-Williams returned on the left flank in place of Jazzi Barnum-Bobb.

That meant Turley shifted to right-back as Jones continued alongside captain Bennett in central defence.

And it was the former Forest Green Rovers man who broke the deadlock.

Turley showed great strength to get on the end of a Mark Randall corner from the left, which was flicked on by Marlon Jackson, and poke it in at the far post.

It was no less than County deserved for an encouraging first half performance.

Feeney’s men weathered an early storm in the opening 10 minutes as Sean Clohessy and Gavin Massey delivered dangerous crosses from the right but strikers Ollie Palmer and Paul McCallum couldn’t take advantage.

And after that early burst there was little pressure from Orient as the Exiles grew into the game.

The impressive Sean Rigg twice went close – firing just wide from the right after beating Sandro Semedo to the ball and then sending a volley over the top after Myrie-Williams’ cross was cut out.

Green showed good skill to sidestep his marker after Randall’s free-kick had been punched clear but his shot was wayward.

At the other end Palmer turned and shot straight at Joe Day after being picked out by Massey but thereafter the hosts were restricted to speculative shots from distance.

And, after Turley’s goal, the home fans soon began to voice their frustrations.

The murmurs of discontent grew louder after the break as Liam Kelly was denied a penalty after going down in the box.

But the pressure from the hosts was also growing and Jones and Turley had to be alert to block goalbound efforts from Palmer and Kelly.

Rigg had an excellent chance to settle the game just after the hour but he took too long after being released through the middle and lost possession.

The ball broke to Jackson but his shot was wild and the chance was gone.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men pushed hard for a way back into the game and Palmer missed two good opportunities with close range headers.

Bennett produced an excellent block before substitute Nigel Atangana blasted over from a corner and Kelly skewed his shot just inches wide of Day’s far post.

The five minutes of added time were nailbiting but County held on to take a precious three points back home.
