NEWPORT County AFC new boy Sid Nelson says he is “buzzing” to be here after joining the club on loan, writes Ryan Robinson.

Nelson, aged 21, has joined the Exiles on loan until the end of the season having made his debut for Millwall as an 18-year-old in the Championship in 2014.

Speaking after his first training session with his new teammates, Nelson said the decision to move here was the easiest of his career so far.

“I had a very positive chat with the gaffer and he made it very easy for me to want to come down here,” he said.

The centre-half also described the influence of Millwall teammate and former Wales international Steve Morison, who played for Graham Westley at Stevenage, as being a pivotal factor in rejecting other clubs in favour of County.

“Morro is like a father figure down at Millwall and we had a good chat about the opportunity at Newport and it was all positive about this football club.”

On his new teammates and first training session with the club, Nelson said he cannot believe how the club is in a relegation dogfight.

“The club are bottom of the league at the moment but they are not worthy of being in that position,” he said.

“This club is going in one direction and that is up.

“My job here is to push the club as high up the table as possible.”

Asked to describe himself, Nelson said he will give “110%” to the cause and is looking forward to gaining vital experience at the club.

“Its’s all about getting as many games down here as possible, but the main aim for me is to keep clean sheets and get the three points week in, week out meaning that we can get the club as far up the table as possible.

“There are some very experienced boys here and hopefully they rub off on me and I rub off on them and then it all works for this football club.”

Manager Westley is delighted to get the deal over the line.

“You can’t keep conceding the amount of goals that we do on a regular basis if you want to stay in this league,” he said.

“Sid is the type of player that is capable of keeping clean sheets at this level and he will certainly help us keep more clean sheets during his time at Newport County AFC.”

Westley even says his time at the club may help him in having a senior role with his parent club in the future, replicating his youth team captaincy he held before turning professional.

“He will bring a lot of the right qualities into this football club.

“The sort of qualities that will make him a future Millwall captain, I have no doubt about that.”

Westley also insists that a youthful addition is perfect ahead of the second half of the season.

“Age is never an issue to me – what matters is if they can make a difference and do a job for the football club.

“And Sid is a player capable of making that difference for Newport County AFC.”
