SWANSEA City youngster Alex Samuel has become the fifth striker to sign for Newport County AFC in less than two weeks.

The 21-year-old joins on loan from the Exiles’ Premier League neighbours until the end of the season and is available to face Colchester United tomorrow.

Neath-born Samuel follows Aaron Williams, Jaanai Gordon, Craig Reid and Florent Bojaj in boosting the attacking ranks at Rodney Parade this month.

Manager Graham Westley has also brought in four defenders with David Pipe, Sid Nelson, Mark O’Brien and Mickey Demetriou also joining the club this month.

Samuel, who has represented Wales at under-19 level, started his career at Aberystwyth Town and scored four goals in 30 appearances during a loan spell in Scotland with Greenock Morton last season.

And he has already scored at Rodney Parade this season with a spectacular effort for the Swans’ under-23s in their 2-1 victory over County in the EFL Trophy in October.

Speaking after the loan deal had been agreed, Westley said: “Alex brings pace and power. He can play wide or up top. And as we all know, pace can change games.

“The EFL Trophy game at Newport was a good advert for what Alex can do.

“His threat was constant and his winning goal was well deserved.

“With young players, it is important to be patient and keep expectations in check.

“But there is always a youngster who catches fire and it will be great if Alex fulfils his potential as quickly as Josh Sheehan rose to prominence.”
