THROW the form book in the air, throw a match in the air just a second later; because as a Newport County AFC fan the form book is meaningless paper.

A home draw against Colchester United may not sound like an incredible result but it doesn’t matter about who County played, or the score; all that matters is they didn’t lose!

Graham Westley new-look team performed excellently to equal one of the divisions most in-form sides.

United, who had won all of their last five league games, came into the match with a whole different attitude to Westley’s side, things were all brilliant in Essex.

The club is much larger, with a bigger budget, fan-base and reputation; on paper and in most of the Exiles fans’ minds before the match, it looked like County were expecting a ninth straight defeat.

But on the day, there was absolutely nothing in the game.

Whether you’re pushing for the play-offs in the Conference all the way up to the bottom of League One, there is very little between teams and often it’s just one individual’s bit of class that changes the game.

County can give anyone in this division a game; we are some points astray but just three or four more wins of fellow strugglers could just be enough to lift us out of the drop zone.

As a supporter there is nothing worse than travelling, spending money that maybe could be used in a better way, and watching the game to go home feeling your team didn’t give it everything. Sadly sometimes the supporters, including myself, have felt this way.

At times County have lacked that energy, that bit of hunger for the win. But not on Saturday. With so many new players in the squad everyone knows their first team place is up for grabs. If they play poorly, then someone else is given the chance.

We want to see players giving absolutely everything, and working hard and that’s why I was feeling a lot happier as I left Rodney Parade.

Being bottom of the league is clearly difficult, but when this team is giving it their all like they have done so far in 2017 it’s not too bad. We just hope our hard work will turn into points.

A trip to Barnet awaits County next, and it’s another which County can go and get something if they perform in a similar nature to Saturday.
