NEWPORT County AFC caretaker manager Michael Flynn declared a 1-0 win over Yeovil Town “a huge result” but warned it’s not time to start celebrating just yet.

A third successive 1-0 victory and a fifth win in eight games since Flynn replaced Graham Westley moved County to within one point of safety at the bottom of League Two.

The players left the pitch accompanied by the theme from the Great Escape and the bumper Good Friday crowd at Rodney Parade sang ‘we are staying up’ but the Exiles remain in the bottom two with four games left to play.

They are one point behind Hartlepool United and two off Cheltenham Town, while Yeovil are now just four points clear of the drop zone.

County travel to second-placed Plymouth Argyle, who need a point to clinch promotion, on Monday and Flynn’s mind is already on the match at Home Park.

“It’s a huge result. We’ve pulled Yeovil into it as well now,” said the Exiles boss.

“But we’ve got a difficult fixture away to Plymouth on Monday so it’s no time to bask in happiness.

“We’re still in the bottom two and we’ve got a tough game again on Monday so we’ll straight away focus and get ready to go again.”

South Wales Argus:

Flynn again spoke of his pride after another fully committed performance.

“We’ve clawed back 10 points in eight games, which is a huge effort from the boys,” he said.

“I keep saying it and I won’t get bored of saying it – the players were absolutely outstanding.

“I thought we were by far the better team but we just lacked that cutting edge in the final third.

“We should have scored two or three but luckily I told Mickey Demetriou to take the free-kick and he scored.

“He’s got a sweet left foot and I fancied him but I’m not taking the credit because he still had to score it.

“I’d like a few more tap-ins to settle the nerves a bit,” he added.

“And we had six minutes of stoppage time so I don’t know what they’re trying to do to me.

“I’ve definitely aged already but it felt quite comfortable today.

“I don’t mean that in a detrimental way to Yeovil but the boys looked quite solid again.

“It’s another clean sheet and we were doing the right things in the right areas. I’m proud of them.”

While County aim to spoil the promotion party at Plymouth on Monday, Hartlepool go to bottom club Leyton Orient and Cheltenham host Grimsby Town.

“We’ve closed the gap again,” said Flynn. “We’ve got a tough game but so have Hartlepool.

“It’s not going to be easy for them at Leyton Orient, who got a good result against Luton so they are fighting.

“We’ve got to go there and be confident. We can only worry about ourselves and we’ll see where we are come 5pm on Monday.”
