NEWPORT County AFC will be aiming to postpone Plymouth’s promotion party at Home Park this afternoon, according to goal machine Mickey Demetriou.

Hosts Argyle need just one point to confirm their place in League One next season but County are determined to keep their Great Escape bid on track.

The Exiles are now just one point from safety after Demetriou’s free-kick was enough to beat Yeovil Town on Good Friday – less than two weeks after he scored the winner against Crawley Town at Rodney Parade.

Three successive victories have given Michael Flynn’s men real momentum and put the pressure on Hartlepool United in 22nd, Cheltenham Town in 21st and Yeovil in 20th.

While County are at second-placed Plymouth today, Pools visit basement boys Leyton Orient, Cheltenham host Grimsby Town and Yeovil welcome Crewe Alexandra to Huish Park.

“We’re just taking one game at a time and this is a big game now,” said Demetriou, who previously won promotion from League Two with Shrewsbury Town.

“They’ll be looking to get promoted so hopefully we can spoil that.

“We’ll try to take three points off them.

“It’s a massive game for them as well and it will probably be a full house.

“I’ve done it before and it’s a great feeling to go up but hopefully we can put that on the back burner for another week.”

South Wales Argus:

Demetriou believes the Exiles can cause an upset at Plymouth after pushing fellow promotion hopefuls Portsmouth close at Fratton Park last month.

“We went down to Portsmouth and played well,” said the defender. “We created lots of chances and were unlucky to lose the game so hopefully we won’t let the occasion get to us.

“Their crowd is going to be huge and we just need to go and play our game and on a better pitch we can try to play some football down there and hopefully go and get three points.

“We need to take three points because the sooner we take those three points and get out of the bottom two the better.

“Hopefully we can get them and spoil their promotion party and give us a big helping hand.”

County have won five of the eight games since caretaker boss Flynn replaced Graham Westley and Demetriou believes they are finally seeing the rewards for their hard work.

“We are within touching distance now – we’ve worked hard these past six weeks,” added the 27-year-old.

“We worked hard the last 16 weeks since I’ve been here.

“The results didn’t go the way we wanted to start with but we’ve dug deep and with the players we’ve got we always back ourselves to get three points.”

The 1979 disco hit Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now was again blasting out of the County dressing room after Friday’s victory.

“It’s superstition now,” said Demetriou. “The last few games we’ve won we’ve had that on straight after the game.

“Obviously we need results to go our way as well but we know we can do it.”
