NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is still on the hunt for more new signings but he’s excited by the talent he’s already brought to Rodney Parade this summer.

Flynn told the Argus yesterday that he’s targeting another two strikers and a left-back before the 2017-2018 season gets under way on August 5.

But he’s delighted by the business he’s done so far with central midfielder Matty Dolan, striker Frank Nouble and wide men Robbie Willmott and Lamar Reynolds all joining the club since May.

“I’m very happy with the signings we’ve made,” said the Exile boss.

“Matty is a very good ball player and I’ve been very impressed with his running.

“He’s fitted in well with the boys and I’m very glad we got him.

“He’s a calm footballer with a very good left foot, he’s good on set-plays and he gives us a lot of options.

“We’ve got a bit of competition in midfield now and that’s what we’re after.

“Midfield is not a priority in terms of recruitment at the moment, although that can change.”

South Wales Argus:

Nouble (above) worked with Justin Edinburgh at Gillingham last season and Flynn revealed that he had sought the advice of the former County manager before concluding the deal.

“Frank has come in almost a stone lighter than he was last season and he looks like he means business,” he said.

“He’s doing very well with his timings in the runs and with the football he’s looking strong and intelligent so hopefully he stays like that.

“I spoke to Justin about him and he said it was a no-brainer. He’s never played at this level before, he’s got something to prove and he’s good to have around the camp.”

Willmott needs no introduction to County fans having helped the club to promotion in a productive two and a half seasons between 2013 and 2015.

South Wales Argus:

But Reynolds (above) is an unknown quantity. The 21-year-old was signed from Brentwood Town after impressing at Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy and Flynn hopes a two-year deal will help ease the pressure on the youngster.

“We’ll know a lot more about him after pre-season but I think he’s got the potential to be a very good centre-forward,” said the boss.

“He’s quite strong considering he’s not the biggest muscle-wise and he’s very quick and I’m looking forward to seeing how his finishing is once we start proper ball-work.

“I had a couple of people watching him at the Vardy Academy and he was the best player there. I was told that by three different people.

“He fits in with what we want – he’s young, he’s hungry and he’s well within budget.

“The two-year deal protects the club and it also gives the boy a little bit of security.

“It means there’s a bit less pressure on him and he’s not thinking ‘if I don’t do it in three months it could all go wrong’.

“We need to take that pressure away when they are that age and it’s his first time in professional football.

“It was similar when I went to Wigan from Barry. They gave me a two-year deal for those reasons as well.

“That helped me and hopefully it helps Lamar.”
