NEWPORT County AFC are reported to be in a two-way battle with League Two rivals Yeovil Town for the signature of young Welsh goalkeeper Oliver Davies.

The 22-year-old former Swansea City academy stopper has left Hereford after just a month and is set to join County or Yeovil, according to former Exiles manager Peter Beadle.

The Bulls boss told the Hereford Times: “Ollie has had an offer from Yeovil to do a week there.

“I spoke to him on Thursday and they wanted him there until the end of the week.

“I then spoke to him [on Friday] to ask if he was with us and Yeovil wanted him to play in their game at Frome today [on Saturday] and I think they were going to make a decision then.

“But he also said that Newport had made an offer. So either way, he was going to take one or the other.

“So unfortunately, Ollie has moved on, which is a shame.

“I'm disappointed because we worked hard to get him here and was looking forward to seeing him work.

“But I understand why he's done it because he wants to go back to first team football.”

Davies was released by the Swans last summer after two loan spells with Kilmarnock.

He spent last season at Merthyr Town, helping them to finish third in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier.

But the Martyrs missed out on promotion after losing the play-off semi-final on penalties and Davies moved on to Hereford last month.

Speaking at the end of June, Beadle said: “He's a new style goalkeeper and can play with his feet as well which suits the way we play.

“Oliver is looking forward to the challenge and wants to get back into full-time football.”

Davies featured as a second-half substitute for Yeovil at Frome on Saturday.

Former County winger Jennison Myrie-Williams also played for the Glovers, as did former Wales international Jermaine Easter (above, right).

The 35-year-old striker featured in County’s friendly at Undy AFC on July 14 but has played in pre-season gamed for the Glovers against Llanelli and Frome over the past week.

And Yeovil manager Darren Way is confident of signing the Cardiff-born veteran who won 12 caps for Wales between 2007 and 2014.

Way told SomersetLive: “I’m looking to try to do something with Jermaine.

“As you can imagine he’s probably got one or two other clubs that he’s thinking about as well, so I’m trying to do my best to try and get Jermaine in.

“Then like any deal that we have to do is finances as well, that’s a problem that we have to deal with, so overall there’s one or two other players that I’d like to keep at the football club so I’ll be doing my best over the next few days to make that happen.

“From the experience that he’s gained and having the promotions that he’s had at Bristol Rovers and with certain other younger players that we’ve got within the group, he’s a very good addition to help them and he’s had success so he ticks all the right boxes.”

Meanwhile, Bath City are closing in on a deal for former Exiles winger Jack Compton (above).

The 28-year-old was an unused substitute in the Romans' 2-0 pre-season win at Clevedon Town on Saturday afternoon.

Released by County at the end of last season, Compton had been on trial with Yeovil this summer and featured in their 3-1 defeat to Bristol City last week.

But he is set for a switch to team up with Darren Jones in the National League South with Bath in a move that boss Gary Owers has been working on throughout the off-season.

“Jack is someone I think we'll finalise a deal with this week,” Owers told the Bath Chronicle.

“He's a quality player, been around the league and has to come in and show everyone how good he is.

“He had a slight groin strain today so that will be subject to him being fit.

“But he's a quality addition to the squad, that sort of left footer that I've been looking for.

“I've been chasing him since the end of last season. I've been trying to entice him here.

“He was at Newport and I think he had a few things going on at the end of the season and decided he wanted to stay closer to home.

“He's been around a few clubs and hasn't got anything sorted or that he can agree, and he's made the decision to come play for us, which I'm pleased about.”
