NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn hopes to add two new players to his squad before Saturday’s final pre-season friendly at Northampton Town.

Flynn was disappointed by the performance of a number of trialists in last night’s 2-0 defeat at Barry Town United.

But former Premier League pair Zavon Hines and Sanchez Watt did impress and could be offered deals.

Ex-West Ham United winger Hines played 90 minutes at Jenner Park, while former Arsenal attacker Watt came off the bench at half-time.

“It wasn’t good enough,” said Flynn after the match.

“I thought there were three players who came out of it with any credit and one of them was a 16-year-old.

“Tom Owen-Evans, Zavon Hines and Jay Foulston were the three that stood out for me.

“Maybe one of the trialists is worth having another look at but we’re getting down to the business part now and I really need to narrow things down.

“I need to be certain that they are going to help improve the squad and add something. If not then I won’t be wasting time on signing them.

"I’ll make those decisions this week but a lot of decisions were made tonight.

“We go to Northampton now and I want to concentrate on the squad we’ve got.

"It will be a full squad and hopefully we’ll have one or two in before that.”

Asked about Hines and Watt (above), the Exiles boss said: “I thought Hines did alright and Sanchez looked lively when he came on so that is food for thought.

“They’ve got to have the right attitude, they’ve got to fit amongst the boys and around the club and the ethos we have at this club.

“It’s not just about ability, you need everything.

“If it was just about ability they might be playing higher.

“But those two caught the eye and Zavon impressed me with his attitude.

“I was going to take him off but he said ‘no, please, I want to play and show you [what I can do]’ and that’s a step in the right direction.”

Flynn also revealed that there are likely to be players leaving Rodney Parade before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

He added: “I’ll be speaking to one or two that won’t be in my plans and need to go and get first team football because they won’t get it here.”
