THIS time last year Robbie Willmott was playing away games at the likes of St Albans City and Maidenhead United so he’s relishing trips to Coventry City and Leeds United more than most of his Newport County AFC teammates.

Willmott returned to the Exiles this summer after two years in non-league football with Ebbsfleet United, Eastleigh, Bishop’s Stortford and Chelmsford City.

In August 2016 he and his Chelmsford teammates were beaten at St Albans and Maidenhead but at the end of the 2016-2017 season Willmott collected the player of the year award for the Clarets after contributing more than 30 assists in his single season at the club.

And 12 months on, he can’t wait to take on two former Premier League clubs with the Exiles.

“Coventry and Leeds are two massive clubs,” he said.

“[Watching] as a boy they were both in the Premiership so they are big clubs with big support.

“The Ricoh and Elland Road are two grounds that you want to play in every week if you can so for us going there is going to be great.

“At Coventry we want to go and get the three points and then try and create an upset in the cup at Leeds so there are two different game plans.”

Michael Flynn’s men take on Coventry in League Two on Saturday before travelling to Leeds next Tuesday for the Carabao Cup second round clash.

Willmott will hope to keep his place in the starting XI but where he will play is a mystery.

The versatile 27-year-old played at right wing-back in the 3-3 draw at Stevenage before switching to a wide right attacking role in the cup win at Southend United.

He was back at right wing-back for last week’s 1-1 draw at Crewe Alexandra but moved further forward when the hosts had a man sent off.

“I think everyone at the club knows that I don’t mind what position I play,” Willmott told iFollow Exiles.

“I started right-wing-back [at Crewe] and then went right for three up front so I don’t mind.

“I felt I put a few decent balls in but I’ve learnt to play different positions.

“There are a lot of good players at this club, the management and the coaching that I’m getting means I’m able to be more intelligent in my play without the ball.

“It helps when I’m playing in defence with the likes of Mark O’Brien. He pulls me over and talks to me all the time so that helps me a lot.”

Flynn has been linked with a loan move for AFC Bournemouth striker Joe Quigley this week.

Meanwhile, winger Jordan Green, who moved from the Cherries to Newport on loan last season, has now joined League Two rivals Yeovil Town on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old made 16 appearances for the Exiles last season.

Green enjoyed a mixed time at Rodney Parade but did score twice, netting in the 4-1 defeat at Plymouth Argyle in the Checkatrade Trophy and the 4-1 FA Cup replay victory over Alfreton Town.

He has signed a deal at Huish Park until the end of the 2017-2018 season.

After spending time with the Glovers squad in recent weeks, boss Darren Way was pleased to add Green to his attacking ranks.

“Jordan has the potential to reach a very high standard,” the Yeovil boss told YTFC.net.

“He's quick, clever and difficult to mark. I'm happy to add Jordan to our ranks.”
