NEWPORT County AFC can “definitely” make the League Two play-offs, according to confident Exiles defender Ben White.

County head to high-flying Accrington Stanley today (kick-off 3pm) without a win in four league games, but they remain firmly in touch with the top seven.

Wycombe Wanderers, who currently occupy the last of the four play-off places in seventh, sit just one point above the Rodney Parade outfit.

And White, on loan at Newport from Premier League new boys Brighton, reckons boss Michael Flynn’s squad has what it takes to really challenge for promotion to League One this term.

When asked if the play-offs were a realistic target for the Exiles, the 20-year-old White responded by saying: “Yeah, definitely.

“We’ve got a strong team, I see that in training every day, and in the matches we’ve got big players who can produce the goods.

“I want to help the club get into the play-offs and hopefully get them into League One.”

White is thoroughly enjoying his time in South Wales having joined the club on a loan deal until the end of the campaign.

“I'm loving it here,” he went on to add. “It’s really good, compared to what I thought it would be.

"Coming from Brighton to Newport, it’s a bit of a difference and, because it’s my first loan, I didn’t really know what to expect.

“It’s very physical compared to what I played with the under-23s (at Brighton).

“It’s completely different and you never know who’s going to win the game because one long ball can lead to a goal, so you have to really concentrate for the whole game.

"Playing games is the way you learn.

"You can do all the training in the world but if you haven’t played then you won’t learn as much as you could.”

He continued: “The fans have been great – that is a big thing for me.

“I didn’t realise how much the fans had a part to play in the club.”

Today’s fixture at the Wham Stadium pits County against a side who have surprised a lot of people by claiming 33 points from 17 matches to date.

John Coleman’s Accrington could go top of the table if they win and leaders Notts County slip up at home to Cheltenham Town.

"It’s the first time I’ll have been there but one of the boys from Brighton is there so it’ll be good to see him,” said White.

“They’re doing well and it will be a good game.

“Every game is the same for me.

"I don’t think too much about who I’m playing, I just turn up and do as well as I can.

“It’s always nice to get a win.

"It lifts the spirits of the lads in the week but we’re always strong and positive, whatever the results.

“Obviously we need to keep picking up three points to get us up the table.”
