GOALKEEPER Joe Day is set to make his 150th league appearance for Newport County AFC in tonight’s home clash with Crawley Town.

Day is the longest-serving member of the Exiles squad, having arrived at Rodney Parade from Peterborough United in 2014.

Manager Michael Flynn reiterated that he believes he has the best goalkeeper in League Two.

“I’ve got to be careful drawing attention to him, even though he’s under a decent contract, but he’s the best goalkeeper in the league for me by a country mile,” said the boss.

“He’s a great character and he’s a joy to work with. He’s someone the boys look up to.

“There’s no arrogance or cockiness about him. He just gets on with the job and he’s a credit to himself, his family and the football club.”

After tonight’s clash with Crawley, County host Morecambe on Tuesday night before welcoming Tottenham Hotspur to Rodney Parade on Saturday, January 27.

“I’ve said I want us to be in the play-off positions by the Spurs game,” said Flynn.

“That’s our aim and we’ve got two home games now to do it so if we were ever going to have a chance of doing it would be now.

“But that’s not to say we’re taking anything lightly. We lost up at Morecambe and we had a very difficult game at Crawley.

“They are two tough games and anybody can beat anybody in League Two.”

Harry Kewell’s Crawley are in good form after winning each of their last three games.

“They have had a good few weeks,” added Flynn. “They seem to have got into Harry’s way of thinking and what he wants from his team.

“It’s going to be a difficult game. They’ve got some very good players and it’s not going to be easy, that’s for sure.”

Kewell was critical of the way Flynn’s men played in September, particularly their focus on set-pieces.

Mickey Demetriou scored from two corners in a 2-1 win and the manager will be happy to see a repeat tonight.

“I don’t care if he’s upset, to be honest,” said the Exiles boss in response to Kewell’s comments.

“If we score a set-piece to win the game I’ll be more than happy.

“I think anybody that watched the Leeds game will know that we’re not a direct football team.

“Yes, we score from set-plays but that’s because we work on them. And we don’t concede many from set-plays, because we work on them.

“I’m not really interested in people’s negative comments on the way we play because the amount of respect and admiration we’ve had from a lot of football managers about the way we play and the way we’ve improved far outweighs the negative comments.”
