AS WELL as fighting for a place in the team to face Tottenham Hotspur, the Newport County AFC players have a chance to banish the memories of their worst performance of the season when they take on Morecambe on Tuesday.

Before welcoming Premier League giants Spurs to Newport in the FA Cup on Saturday, County will lock horns with one of their bogey sides at Rodney Parade.

After five successive defeats to Morecambe between 2013 and 2015, the Exiles looked to have ended their Shrimps allergy with two wins and a draw in their next three encounters.

But Jim Bentley’s men came back to haunt County once again at the Globe Arena again last September and Flynn was enraged by his team’s display in that 2-1 defeat.

“It was a terrible performance, a gutless performance, a spineless performance,” he said at the time.

“We pulled out of tackles and were beaten up all around the park.

“I’ve said in the past there’s ways to lose games, and that wasn’t one of them.

“I’ve told them it’s a performance I don’t want to be associated with because it’s not what I’m about.”

Speaking after Friday’s 2-1 win over Crawley Town, Flynn said he expects his side to put in a much better performance against Morecambe tomorrow.

“I don’t think it’s about revenge,” he said. “I thought we were poor up there and we didn’t deserve to win and now we’ve got a chance to put it right.”

And he says the league clash is more important than the eagerly anticipated visit of Spurs.

“That is one down and we’ve got another big game on Tuesday night now before we think about Spurs,” he said.

“My biggest concern now is getting three points against Morecambe, who are a group of fighters with a good manager and good players.

“They’re down the bottom and they’re struggling but they always go on a run and they’re a bit of a bogey team for us.

“I’ve got a lot of time for Jim Bentley and I’ll never take them lightly.

“I thought we were outstanding in the first half [against Crawley] and we’ve hit a good run of form now,” he added.

“We’ve had a blip and we might have another blip but I’m sure we’ll bounce back and we’ll keep going.

“We’ve got 18 games left and it’s getting interesting now.”

Friday's victory saw County climb to fifth in the League Two table but wins for Exeter City, Coventry City and Mansfield Town on Saturday meant Flynn's men dropped back down to ninth.

They remain two points off the top-seven and four below third-placed Accrington Stanley.

Flynn singled out young defender Ben White (above), who created the first goal for Padraig Amond, and veteran striker Paul Hayes for praise after the win over Crawley.

“It was a superb goal and the pass was out of this world,” he said.

“I said it when he did it with his right foot at Cheltenham and he’s now gone and done exactly the same pass with his left foot.

“That’s the quality that the young lad has and again it was another outstanding header [from Amond].”

He continued: “Paul Hayes was absolutely superb when he came on.

“I know it was only a few minutes but his game-management and his experience is going to be vital for us.

“He changed it when he came on. The onslaught was over when he came on. He was taking the ball high up the pitch, getting hold of it and keeping them pinned back.

“That’s what I brought him here for and I’m delighted with what he did.”
