Former captain Gary Warren can't wait to take on Newport County with Yeovil Town

Warren has his own place in County’s history after captaining the club to the Conference South title in 2010 and leading them to a first-ever Wembley appearance in the FA Trophy final two years later.

The commanding centre-back moved on to play for Terry Butcher’s Inverness Caledonian Thistle after defeat to York City at the home of English football in May 2012 (below).

But after six years in Scotland, which saw him play in the Europa League in 2015 and lift the Scottish Challenge Cup earlier this year, Warren has joined County’s League Two rivals Yeovil Town.

Despite turning 34 next month, the Bristol-born defender has signed a two-year deal and he’s excited by what lies in store for him at Huish Park.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in the Football League,” said Warren.

“I’ve been up north for six years and this is a fresh start for me and a chance to play.

“Yeovil is close to home and it’s a great opportunity for me.

“Darren Way has invested a lot of time and interest in me and the fact that he offered me a two-year deal shows a lot of trust and faith in me, which I want to repay.

“I want to be successful,” added the former Mangotsfield United and Team Bath man. “Wherever I’ve been I’ve always won things and that’s why you play football – to win trophies. Otherwise you might as well be playing with a bunch of mates in the park.

“Yeovil have got a young squad, full of athletic and strong players and I’m excited about the new season.”

One of the first dates Warren looked for when he joined the Glovers was the trip to Rodney Parade to take on the Exiles and he can’t wait for the match on September 15.

“The Newport game is one I’m obviously looking forward to,” said the man who played 120 matches in three years for the Exiles after being signed by Dean Holdsworth.

“I’ve got great memories of my time there and I’ve still got some friends at the club.

"It will be great to see some old faces.

“We trained there a few times when I was at the club but I never got to play at Rodney Parade so that will be a new experience for me.

“I’ve been down to watch a few matches since I left so I know what the atmosphere is like and the way the club has developed since I left is amazing.

“Michael Flynn has done a fantastic job since he took over and they are looking to build each year.

“He’s got a settled side there now so there wasn’t really any interest from them in me this summer but it’s great to see them doing so well.

“I’m really pleased for everyone at the club but I’m a Yeovil player now so I will be looking to turn them over in September!”
