NEWPORT County AFC winger Keanu Marsh-Brown admits he has a point to prove this season after a disappointing end to his time at Forest Green Rovers.

The 25-year-old helped Rovers to two successive National League play-off finals – scoring a spectacular goal in defeat at Wembley in 2016 – and promotion to the Football League in 2017.

But things turned sour for Marsh-Brown at the Gloucestershire club last season with manager Mark Cooper apparently viewing him as a luxury player he could do without.

Cooper told the Stroud News & Journal: “One moment of magic now and again is not enough for us in the league we are in now.”

Marsh-Brown ended the 2017-2018 season back in the National League on loan at Dover Athletic but County reportedly beat off interest from a League One club to secure his signature this summer.

And the former Yeovil Town and Barnet man is confident that he will be a hit in Newport.

Asked about the end of his Forest Green career, Marsh-Brown said: “I think it was just a miscommunication from both sides and obviously that happens in football. You’ve just got to get your head down and keep pushing.

“But I’ve signed for Newport now and I just want to look forward and focus on the positives.

“It’s nice to have the fans’ backing and to come to a club where you feel wanted – that’s really important for a player.

“I’m an exciting player. I look forward to playing games week in and week out and bringing my talent to the team.

“I like to score goals and assist goals and bring a lot to the team so hopefully I can do that this year.

“You’ve always got a point to prove to everyone,” he added.

“There’s always going to be doubters out there so every time you step out on the pitch you’ve got a point to prove to yourself and to your teammates.”

Marsh-Brown played for 45 minutes in Wednesday’s behind-closed-doors friendly at Bristol City and he’s likely to feature again at Chippenham Town tomorrow.

“It’ll be good to get some game-time for all the boys after a long, tough week and get playing for the ball,” he said.

“It’s a really good squad and I’m excited. We’re putting in the hard work now and we’ll get the rewards at the end of it. That’s what we want – to be up there at the end of the season.”

Marsh-Brown (above with Jamille Matt) was speaking at the launch of County’s new home, away and third kits at Friars Walk on Tuesday.

“It was nice to meet some of the fans,” he said. “Obviously they play a big part for the club and it was great to meet them.

“Everyone has been really welcoming. I knew a few of the boys already but everyone has made me feel part of the team and I’m looking forward to the season now.”

The Exiles have announced that two local children’s charities – Changing Minds at Newport Mind and the Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund – will replace main shirt sponsor Interbet on kids’ retail kits for the new season.

The club has not yet announced when the kit will be on sale.
