NEWPORT County AFC striker Padraig Amond is delighted that boss Michael Flynn won the Sky Bet League Two manager of the month award for September but he’s questioned why no Exiles player was recognised.

Flynn beat Lincoln City’s Danny Cowley, Bury boss Ryan Lowe and Stevenage’s Dino Maamria to the award after guiding County to four wins out of five last month.

Oldham Athletic striker Sam Surridge beat Exeter City’s Pierce Sweeney, Colchester United’s Luke Norris and Lincoln’s Jason Shackell to the player of the month award.

And Amond believes at least one County player deserved a nomination in a month that saw them climb to second in the table behind the Imps.

“It’s good for the manager to get that recognition,” said the striker.

“It’s a credit to him and the rest of the staff, and to the players as well.

“We might as well give ourselves some credit because we’ve been doing alright as well.

“I was a little bit disappointed that we won four out of five games and none of the players got nominated for player of the month.

“Maybe it’s just because we’ve just been collectively really good, barring that one blip [the shock 6-0 home defeat to Yeovil Town].

“But it’s great for the manager to get it and hopefully it’s not the last one he’ll get this season.”

October began with a disappointing 3-3 draw at home to bottom club Macclesfield Town on Tuesday night and the Exiles aim to take out their frustrations on Forest Green Rovers this afternoon.

“It was probably one of those nights where the whole world was against us and everything went wrong and we still came out with a point so there’s positives to take from that,” said Amond.

The Irishman scored twice in a 4-0 win at Forest Green last October and he’s looking forward to returning to The New Lawn.

“I enjoy playing there,” he said. “The pitch is always really good, which always helps. We try to pass the ball around the pitch so it will suit us and hopefully we can go there and get a good result.

“They have a good manager and a good squad and the fact that they haven’t been beaten yet is a big thing so let’s go there and be the first team to beat them.”

The match is no longer all-ticket and Amond is expecting a big County contingent.

“Last year we had 800 there and it was a big help,” he said. “I’m not sure how many we’ll have this time but if it’s anything similar to that [it’ll be great].

“The lads do thrive off a big following away from home and last year the noise they made was unbelievable.

“It obviously helps when you score early and then get a second and go on to win 4-0. It always makes it a better day out but hopefully the fans can make a lot of noise and give us the momentum to keep going and get three points.

“We played really well that day and we just have to go there and be on the front foot again. We have to start on the front foot, do exactly what we did last year and hopefully come out with the result.”
