NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is targeting 13 wins and three draws from the remaining 25 games to secure at least a play-off place in League Two.

Saturday’s home clash with MK Dons was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Rodney Parade, meaning County stay on 35 points from 21 games.

The Dons, who started the weekend at the top of the table, dropped to second after Lincoln City beat Morecambe.

But Flynn’s men remain in sixth and did not lose any ground on their promotion rivals.

Third-placed Colchester United, fourth-placed Bury and Tranmere Rovers, who started the weekend in seventh, were all beaten.

And fifth-placed Mansfield Town saw their match at Forest Green Rovers, who dropped from eighth to ninth, abandoned at half-time.

Asked after the postponement at Rodney Parade what it would take for his side to get over the line this season, Flynn said: “We’ve got our targets and I think if we get another 13 wins and three draws that gives us 77 points.

“If we can get to 80, brilliant, but we’ll see where that takes us.

“I think that’s realistic but without putting too much pressure on the players.

“It’s easy to say. We’ve got to go out and do the business but that’s the kind of points tally we need to be looking at.”

A total of 77 points has been enough to secure a League Two play-off spot in each of the past 10 seasons.

County now have a full week to prepare for next Saturday’s trip to new league leaders Lincoln and Flynn is hoping to have a clean bill of health for the pre-Christmas showdown.

“I think they’ll all be fit next weekend,” said the Exiles boss.

“The three who [would have] missed today – Mickey [Demetriou], OB [Mark O’Brien] and Crofty [Andrew Crofts] will all be fit next weekend.

“So, providing we don’t have any injuries [in the week] we’ll be going to Lincoln with a fully fit squad and that’s great news.”

Demetriou (above) was injured during last week’s FA Cup second-round replay win over Wrexham and was not part of the matchday squad on Saturday but the postponement means he could extend a remarkable record of 75 consecutive league starts.

“He’s fractured his cheekbone, which I’m not too happy about because we watched it back and it was bit of a naughty clash,” said Flynn.

“He’s in a strange position. The lap of the gods could keep his consistent run going.

“This would have been the first one he’s missed under me.

“If he’s fit for [next] Saturday then he’ll probably be selected and he can keep his run going.

“He’ll see the specialist on Monday, so we’ll have to wait until then [for an update].”

Saturday would also have been Flynn’s 50th home game as manager but that landmark will have to wait for the Boxing Day meeting with Forest Green.

The 38-year-old is still high up in the betting for the Bristol Rovers job but he insists he is fully focused on County’s promotion push.

“I just want to win football matches for Newport County,” said Flynn.

“We work hard behind the scenes and put in a lot of hours to go through everything.

“I want to improve. I’m reading a lot of books and looking at techniques to improve yourself.

“I’m trying to learn and improve as much as I can and keep things going in the right way.”
