NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn hopes to add to his squad before Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Leicester City.

The transfer window opened on Tuesday and Flynn is looking to add to his options after winning only three of the last 15 games in League Two.

The Exiles boss is also still waiting for confirmation on extending the loan deals of Bristol City pair Tyreeq Bakinson and Cameron Pring and Cardiff City forward Mark Harris.

Asked if there would be additions this week, Flynn said: “I hope so, otherwise I’ll have about 15 on Sunday.

“I’ve been working very hard to try to get some in.”

On the future of Bakinson, Pring and Harris, whose initial loan deals end this month, Flynn said: “We’ll talk about that. I’m speaking to Bristol City [and Cardiff City] and we’ll find out [soon].”

Other players could leave before the end of the month, but not before new recruits are added.

“I think it would look pretty silly if I let a player out now when I haven’t got enough to start with,” said the manager.

Josh Sheehan and Keanu Marsh-Brown are two players who have not had much game-time so far this season but both were used as late substitutes in the 1-0 defeat at Stevenage on New Year’s Day.

Sheehan scored in County's last league win, against Northampton Town on November 27 (below), and he hit the bar in stoppage time at Stevenage.

“I thought Josh did very well when he came on,” said Flynn after Tuesday's defeat.

“He’s been hit and miss a few times this season but nobody wants him to get going more than me because on his day he’s a great little player.

“He’s got to do that week and week out.”

To Flynn's frustration, County have been guilty of missing too many chances in their last two games – the 1-0 defeat on Tuesday and a 0-0 draw with Crawley Town on Saturday.

Antoine Semenyo, who missed those matches with a chest infection, should be fit to return against Leicester but the manager praised the efforts of top scorer Padraig Amond and strike partner Jamille Matt.

“I’m not going to be too critical of the front two,” he said.

“Everybody misses chances and nobody does it on purpose.

“They should be on a lot more, but they’ve scored 15 and 13 and I can’t remember the last time two strikers did that for Newport in the league just over halfway through.”

Sunday’s clash with Leicester is a big occasion for the Exiles but Flynn rejected the suggestion that the prospect of taking on the former Premier League champions has been a distraction for his players.

“I don’t feel that,” he said. “You saw the effort they put in but we just missed too many chances. And not just half chances, we’re talking about simple chances.

“We’ve just got to regroup now and get going again.”
