TOP scorer Padraig Amond is happy to win ugly if it means that Newport County AFC make the League Two play-offs this season.

County were not at their best against Cheltenham Town on Friday night, especially in a poor first half, but they claimed a 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town thanks to a Chris Hussey own goal.

The three points means the Exiles are now just six points off sixth place with a game in hand and Amond was just happy to get the win.

“At this stage of the season it’s about winning, not performances,” said the striker.

“If you play terrible and win 1-0, does anyone really care? It’s just about grinding results out and trying to do everything you can to get the three points.”

Amond saw his shot diverted in by goalkeeper Scott Flinders via the head of Robins defender Hussey, and he’s claiming the goal.

“I think it was my goal,” he said. “It was on target. I know the keeper’s palmed it and their fella’s ran it in but Ade [Azeez] and Jamma [Jamille Matt] said they thought it was going in anyway.

“I don’t think Hussey wants it, so I’m claiming it. As far as I’m concerned, I’m on 22 goals.

“But the most important thing is that it’s a 1-0 win and we’re back on track.

“We just have to keep that pressure on with nine games left and do everything we can to prolong the season.

“You’d like to have the points on the board, but we like being the underdogs."

County are next in action at Yeovil Town on Saturday, March 30.

“The home form is looking after itself,” he added. “We’ve got to sort out the away form now.

“The management prepare the same way away from home as they do at home so there’s no issues there.

“It’s just a case of us players taking the game by the scruff of the neck and hopefully we can do that next time out at Yeovil.”
