CAPTAIN Lee Byrne says the next month will be the true test of Newport Gwent Dragons' character as they experience life on the road.

The Rodney Parade region got their Guinness Pro12 campaign up and running with a 33-15 success against winless Treviso last weekend.

But they now face away games at the Scarlets on Sunday and Edinburgh the following Saturday before they kick-off their European Rugby Challenge Cup campaign at Stade Francais in Paris.

In fact, just two of the Dragons' next 10 fixtures are on their own patch and full-back Byrne says they have to thrive on their travels.

"It was nice to get the home win in our last one at Rodney Parade for a while but we are not going to get ahead of ourselves," said the 34-year-old former Wales and Lions international.

"Treviso are bottom of the league and we knew that we were better than them but it will be a different ball game at the Scarlets.

"It's a derby and, like against the Ospreys, it will be a fiery encounter so the boys have to pick it up.

"It was great to get the bonus point win against Treviso and it was good for confidence but we are now on the road and it will be a test of our character.

"These are three massive away games and we need to more target wins."

Byrne had an injection in his shoulder to lead the charge against Treviso after suffering a painful blow in the home loss to the Ospreys.

He missed the Rodney Parade defeat to Glasgow and was unable to play a big part in training ahead of the fixture with the Italians.

But Byrne, who won 46 caps for Wales, is planning on helping iron out a few problems at the region's Ystrad Mynach training base ahead of Sunday's trip west.

"There's always stuff to work on but the win will do the world of good for everyone and hopefully we can build a bit of momentum," he said.

"We've got to work on a lot of things and need to improve our decision-making and finishing, although Hallam Amos took his tries really well.

"But it was great to have Ashley Smith back, it was the first time that I have played with him and I was really impressed with how his talking helped the backline."
