THE English clubs got the LV= Cup under way this weekend and two of Newport Gwent Dragons' Pool One rivals got off to winning starts.

The competition sees teams from the Dragons' group go up against those in Pool Four.

Adam Hughes and Ceri Sweeney helped their old region when they condemned Gloucester to defeat, centre Hughes scoring an interception try for Exeter and fly-half Sweeney booting 13 points in a 28-27 win at Sandy Park.

The Chiefs scored a penalty try at the death to leave the Cherry and Whites to settle for a losing bonus point.

Bath recorded an expected bonus-point win when they thrashed winless London Welsh 47-7 at the Rec with fly-half Gavin Henson kicking 10 points in a seven-try romp.

And Saracens withstood a late Harlequins charge to win 25-20 at Allianz Park, scoring three tries to take the spoils.

The Dragons get their campaign under way when they travel to the Twickenham Stoop to take on Quins on Friday night before a clash with the Ospreys in Bridgend seven days later. They welcome Exeter and London Welsh to Rodney Parade in the New Year.
