TEENAGE Newport Gwent Dragons winger Ashton Hewitt has been learning from a pair of experienced Wales internationals on the training paddock and intends to show the fruits of his hard graft at the Twickenham Stoop.

Hewitt, who is 20 later to this month, is set to start for the region against Harlequins in the LV= Cup tomorrow evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

It will be the speedster's fifth appearance for the Dragons and comes hot on the heels of last week's start against Ulster, his first in the Guinness Pro12.

That saw him on the opposite flank to wing Aled Brew and Hewitt is enjoying the opportunity to learn his trade alongside the leading try scorer in the Dragons' history.

"When I found out he was returning to the Dragons it was massive for me," said the winger from Caerleon. "I grew up watching him at the Dragons before and the same goes for Lee Byrne with Wales.

"Training and playing with them is a massive deal for me and I've learnt so much, they were once my idols and now they are my competition!

"It's really good and we all push each other in training. I feel I've improved greatly since being in the environment full-time this season and it's making a massive difference to my game."

Hewitt made his Dragons debut against the Scarlets in last season's Anglo-Welsh competition and the following week scored his first try in the win against Wasps at Rodney Parade.

The 19-year-old is a dangerous runner in open play and hopes to give director of rugby Lyn Jones a nudge by shining against the Quins.

"The English still put out strong sides in the LV= Cup so it's a brilliant opportunity to play well and put your hand up for selection in the important Pro12 games," said the Wales Under-20s international.

"Last week was a good chance for me against Ulster and it was nice to have the start at late notice (because of an injury to Ashley Smith) rather than just having 10 minutes at the end.

"Getting 80 minutes has given me confidence ahead of the LV= Cup."
