RYNARD Landman wants to keep Newport Gwent Dragons’ Challenge Cup scenario simple with another stunning European away win in Newcastle, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Dragons will head into their home Pool Three finale against Stade Francais next Saturday with qualification possible regardless of events in the north east of England.

But if the Falcons, who end with a trip to Romania to face Bucharest Wolves, take the spoils at Kingston Park then the region will be left attempting to secure one of three best runners-up spots.

That would mean a tense finale with a raft of possible scenarios involving the other groups.

But the Dragons will have their fate in their own hands if they back up their hard-earned away successes in Paris and Bucharest with another in Newcastle – beat Stade Francais for a second time and they will have a home quarter-final in April.

“We are going there to get the win, we don’t want to leave it to other games or be relying on bonus points or winning by a certain amount,” said lock Landman.

“For the Dragons it would be a big feat to get into the quarters and would lift the players and give them belief.

“We’ve won in France, if we win in Newcastle it will prove we can play at a high level of rugby.”

The Dragons perfect start to the campaign at Stade Jean Bouin, winning 38-22 with a bonus point, was followed by a gut-wrenching 30-26 loss to the Falcons at Rodney Parade.

The region has never won a European tie in England but the manner in which they beat the Top 14 title hopefuls on their own turf, something nobody else has managed this season, means they are confident of breaking that duck.

“Nobody gave us a chance in Paris because French sides don’t lose at home but we went out there and expressed ourselves,” said the South African.

“We played in the right areas and it was tight until the end when we scored two tries. It was a big effort and we produced a great performance. We need to do exactly the same again.”
