HALLAM Amos will get the chance to stake his claim for a place in Wales’ Six Nations opener by starring on the Newport Gwent Dragons wing against Leinster on Friday (kick-off 7.05pm).

The 21-year-old has been released from the national squad by boss Warren Gatland to feature in the Guinness Pro12 fixture at Rodney Parade.

Amos is battling with Alex Cuthbert and Tom James to join George North out wide at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin next Sunday after recovering swiftly from the shoulder injury he suffered against England in the famous World Cup win at Twickenham in October.

He made his return with 80 minutes against Castres in the European Rugby Challenge Cup win in Newport, scoring a try in the opening minute, and then another 70 in the hammering against Sale, having a 10-minute rest after being sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on.

Gatland has decided to send him back to the Dragons to get more game time under his belt against Leinster while full-back Liam Williams will return from a foot injury in the Scarlets clash with Connacht in Galway on Saturday afternoon.

Amos usurped Cuthbert in the World Cup after scoring his first Test try in the Millennium Stadium romp against Uruguay and assistant coach Neil Jenkins confirmed on Monday that he is back in contention for a starting berth.

“To be picked against England at Twickenham in the World Cup says an awful lot about Hallam as a person and a player,” said Jenkins. “He did pretty well until he got injured.”

Amos and Williams are the only two players from the squad released for regional duty.
