HALLAM Amos will make his Newport Gwent Dragons return against Zebre on Friday night – with Wales coach Warren Gatland getting his wish to see him at full-back.

The 21-year-old was given an extended summer break following his summer exertions in New Zealand and sat out the Guinness Pro12 defeat at Ulster on opening weekend.

Amos started all three Tests on the wing against the All Blacks but will wear 15 on his back against the Italians in Newport.

Gatland has previously said that the Dragons young gun's long-term position may be full-back and the Lions boss pondered whether Amos has the top-end speed to be an international winger.

The chance to see the 10-times capped international at 15 comes this weekend but through injury rather than selection after the dependable Carl Meyer suffered a head injury in Belfast.

"We are putting Hallam straight back in the team at full-back," said head coach Kingsley Jones. "We've got to use him there this year, and Tom Prydie as well.

"We were lucky last season with Carl being Mr Consistent but we have a lot of back three players and centres who can play different positions, so we can keep them happy and competitive when rotating them.

"Hallam has the ability to fix defenders and free space for others, which we saw with Taulupe Faletau's try against New Zealand in the first Test.

"Hopefully coming in the line from full-back or counter-attacking, not only will he finish but he can engage and put other people into space because he is such a threat.

"Hallam is in really good nick and raring to go. I hope commentators say his name a lot on Friday night and the same for Pat Howard and Tyler Morgan; we need to work to get to our dangerous players."

Flanker Ollie Griffiths will miss the Zebre fixture but the news isn't as bad as first feared after he suffered a shoulder against Ulster. He could come back into the mix for Munster in round three.

"I don't know if we can pick two sixes to replace him because it was like there were two of him on the field when he was out there," said Jones.

"He is a remarkable talent and we will miss him because he has really stepped up but thankfully it's not too bad."

Captain Lewis Evans is set to replace him at blindside flanker with James Thomas coming onto the bench.

Lock Rynard Landman (calf), tighthead Brok Harris (shoulder) and centre Sam Beard (head) have got the green light to feature against the Italians but tighthead Craig Mitchell (dead leg) is struggling and lock Cory Hill (cut ear) and centre/wing Adam Hughes (head) are ruled out.
