FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons boss Lyn Jones is to return to rugby as head coach of the Welwitschias in the Currie Cup.

The former Wales flanker has been appointed by the Namibia Rugby Union to spearhead the campaign next year and will start his new role in February.

Jones has landed the role on the recommendation of Namibia director of rugby Phil Davies and is relishing the chance to get back into the game.

“To coach in one of the world's truly great rugby competitions, the Currie Cup, is an opportunity too good to let pass me by," he said.

“Phil's plans for Namibian Rugby are typically detailed and impressive and I'm looking forward to doing all I can to add value to his vision.

“In a 22-year coaching career, helping young players realise their potential has always been my focus, and Phil has assembled a squad that is young, talented and keen to prove themselves. I can't wait to get started.”

Former Ospreys chief Jones arrived at Rodney Parade from London Welsh in 2013 before leaving his role last season.

Davies said: “One of the reasons we went for Lyn is that he is a very good technical and tactical coach with huge experience and we hope that knowledge can be transferred back in to help support the growth of our game in Namibia.

“It is a very exciting appointment for Namibian rugby and one that can continue to help support our players and coaches in the country.”
